The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Something I learned about today was The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I was saddened to learn of such a thing. Water covers more than 70 percent of the planet's surface, making our rivers, lakes and oceans the lifeblood of our planet.

Currently, scientists believe the world's largest garbage dump isn't on land…it's in the Pacific Ocean. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch stretches from the coast of California to Japan, and it's estimated to be twice the size of Texas.

In some places, the floating debris—estimated to be about 90 percent plastic—goes 90 feet deep. Elsewhere, there are six times more pieces of plastic than plankton, the main food source for many sea animals.

Marine biologists estimate that about 80 percent of the litter is from land, either dumped directly into waterways or blown into rivers and streams.

I have not done this in a long time, but I will definetly not be throwing any tiny pieces of garbage out the car window, thinking its no big deal anymore... sad but true....

Here is a few websites with some more detailed information:

  2. My son did a report on this. I never even knew about it. How do we not all know about this? It's incredible. Thanks for sharing it on your blog.

  3. NIce look to your blog. Thanks for posting about this. I always feel inadequate in thinking I can make a difference, then I realize it isn't like we did this in a big way. We got here step by little step and we can solve it the same way. If each of us did a little step, it would lead to us demanding comapnies make their steps and it will get that much better.

  4. I think maybe we all feel like that, so if millions of people do one little thing, hey maybe we can help Our world! plus just word of mouth passing one story i feel helps too!

  6. This is such a shame. There is no reason for this except laziness and it makes me mad. I can honestly say I've never littered in my life. My mom was really strict about that, thankfully. :)
